The IIHS is one of the major organizations responsible for rating the safety of new models. It awards the status of Top Safety Pick+ to the very safest vehicles, with those who are only slightly behind earning Top Safety Pick status. This year, it was even harder than ever before to earn the status of a Top Safety Pick+, but Toyota managed to lead the pack.

Why So Few Are Top Safety Pick+

For years, many vehicles have failed to reach Top Safety Pick+ status for lacking technology. For the 2017 ratings, the IIHS made the criteria for this honor stricter, particularly in regards to headlights. This means that while 79 vehicles earned the Top Safety Pick+ status for the 2016 rankings, only 38 managed to for the 2017 ones.

Requirements

To make Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ fair designations, the IIHS has set guidelines that models must meet to qualify. To become a 2017 Top Safety Pick, a vehicle needs a top “Good” rating for five crashworthiness tests, including roof strength, head restraints, side, front, and small overlap. They also need to have a front crash prevention system with an “Advanced” or “Superior” rating.

To become a 2017 Top Safety Pick+, they need to have the same “Good” scores for crashworthiness, but their front crash prevention system must earn an “Advanced” rating. The part of the ratings that caused a problem for most models was the newest addition, a headlight rating of “Acceptable” or “Good.”

Winning Toyotas

Even with the stricter requirements, Toyota managed to take home the most Top Safety Pick+ honors. Those in search of a 2017 Top Safety Pick+ in the Toyota lineup will be able to choose from:
