Texas-Built Tundra Drives 1 Million Miles

Victor Sheppard's Toyota Tundra was one of the first to roll off the assembly line at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Texas, in San Antonio. Sheppard commutes long distances — and we mean long. He regularly makes treks from Louisiana to North Dakota, Wyoming, and Virginia, putting on about 125,000 miles per year.

Nine years after purchase, his Tundra had reached over a million miles, and was still going strong.

"My truck looks great," said Sheppard, "and, except for a few little dents, it's almost like new. Even the seats look just as they were when I bought it. They're not as clean, of course, but they're not busted or worn out."

Over 117 dealership service visits, Sheppard's Tundra received tons of oil changes, new tires, batteries, and timing belt replacements, but the transmission, engine, and paint are all original. In order to study what gave this particular Texas-built Tundra such a reliable edge, Toyota traded Sheppard a brand new 2016 Tundra for his old one. The million-mile pickup will be taken to a Toyota Technical Center to be taken apart, bumper-to-bumper over the course of several months.
